Music Ministry

“Music is ultimately an art of collaboration not personal showmanship.”
                              Robert Shaw

“music has the power to lead us back……to the Creator of all harmony, creating a resonance within us which is like being in tune with the beauty and truth of God, with the reality which no human knowledge or philosophy can ever express.”

“I recall a saying from St. Augustine: Singing is something that lovers do. The source of the song is love; singing is an expression of love.

Learning to sing, to sing in chorus, is not merely an exercise of external hearing and the voice; it is also an education of inner hearing- the hearing of the heart-an exercise and an education in life and in peace. To sing together in chorus and to have all the choruses sing together demands that we pay attention to each other, to the composer, to the director, to the whole complex of music and culture. In this way, singing in chorus teaches us about life, about peace, and about walking together.”
                              Pope Benedict XVI

In consultation with the pastor, the Director of Music prepares the Worship Music for weekend Masses, and special Liturgical celebrations. Some of the ways parishioners can participate in the music ministry program are:

Adult Choir
The St. Paul Choir raises their voices and leads the congregation in singing during one of the Sunday Masses, rotating between the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses. They also lead the singing for Seasonal Liturgies and other solemn occasions. Weekly rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings from September through May from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The choir is open to adults and high school students.

Cantors
Parishioners are invited to become a Cantor, through audition, and lead the congregation in song and prayer. Vocal training, the ability to read music, and a willingness for further training is recommended.

Funeral Choir
The St. Paul Funeral Choir adds a wonderful touch to a Mass of Christian Burial. They lead those present in song by enriching this solemn ceremony. Members are not required to be at every funeral, but they can participate as their personal schedules allow. We meet 45 minutes prior to the funeral. We sing the funeral Mass and represent the sympathy and compassion of the community of St. Paul the Apostle.

Youth Choir
We meet October through May. Practice is Wednesday night from 6:00 - 6:45 pm. We sing at Mass occasionally throughout the church year. Grades one through seven.

 Youth Hand Bell Choir
The Youth Bell Choir is open to children in grades 2 and up. Rudimentary note reading skills are helpful. This group practices on Wednesday nights from 6:45 -7:15 p.m. The Youth Hand Bell Choir performs for the parish on special occasions.

Adult Hand Bell Choir
The Hand Bell Choir enhances St. Paul liturgies on some Sundays and other Liturgical celebrations/festive occasions. The group practices on Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Orchestra
We are open to all instruments and age groups. Practice is seasonal on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. We play at Mass several times throughout the church year.
